Dein erster Kontakt mit der Musik?/Il primo contatto con la musica?/Your first contact with music?
As a musician at the age of 15 when I started to play guitar and write songs. As an earthling: In my mother’s womb when my parents listened to the Stones, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple etc.
Warum spielst du gerne auf der Straße?/Che cosa ti piace del suonare per strada?/What do like about playing music on the street?
I busk all around London because there I have an immediate audience who reacts differently to my songs. When I lived in Seattle, I enjoyed playing on the streets a lot too, because for Americans folk music is very close to their hearts. They really listen and come talk to you when they like your songs.
Welches Konzert hat dich besonders beeindruckt und warum?/Il concerto che ti ha colpito di più e perché?/Which concert impressed you particularly and why?
I like small cozy concerts. Last week I was in Baku in Azerbaijan and I saw a local band play some cover songs and some of their own in their language. It was impressive because for them it’s hard to maintain a practice room, it’s difficult to find spaces where you can play. Azerbaijan is a rather repressive country and that band was part of the opposition. So they live in constant danger of being thrown into jail. When they play Lennon’s “Imagine” it takes on a rather impressive meaning, albeit I don’t really like that song at all…Der Soundtrack deines derzeitigen Lebens?/La colonna sonora della tua vita ora?/The soundtrack of your current life?
Probably Chuck Ragan’s new record. Modern folk music at its best.
Was bedeutet es MusikerIn zu sein?/Cosa significa essere un musicista?/What does it mean to be a musician?
Shitty pay and shattered dreams. But seriously it also has some upsides as e. g. meeting new and interesting people from everywhere and sharing your experiences. Also is there anything better than being on stage and performing live? I don’t think there is.
Was sagt deine Familie zu deiner Entscheidung, Musik zu machen?/Cosa ne pensa la tua famiglia della scelta di fare musica?/What does your family think of your choice to be a musician?
They’ve always supported me.
Wunschkonzert – mögliches unmögliches Konzert: Wen würdest du gerne mal hören?/Concerto dei sogni – concerto impossibile: chi vorresti sentire?/Dream concert – impossible concert: who would you like to hear?
Johnny Cash unplugged in a church in Tennessee.
Erzähl uns eine Anekdote aus deinem Musikerleben, was war die schönste oder schlimmste Erfahrung?/Aneddoti: la migliore o peggiore esperienza della tua carriera musicale?/Best or worse experience of your musical career?
Best: Playing shows in and around Seattle.
Worst: Being kicked out of America for trying to play some free shows. Fucking paranoid Americans…
